Brainspotting

  • "Where you look determines how you feel." — Dr. David Grand, Founder of Brainspotting

Brainspotting is a brain-based, trauma-informed therapy that helps access and process experiences stored within the deeper regions of the brain and nervous system. Developed by Dr. David Grand, Brainspotting is based on the understanding that where we look can influence how we access emotions, memories, and unresolved experiences.

Unlike traditional talk therapy, Brainspotting works with the brain's natural ability to process and heal. By identifying and maintaining focus on a specific eye position, known as a "brainspot," therapy can access neural networks connected to trauma, anxiety, stress, and other emotional experiences that may not be fully accessible through conversation alone.

Brainspotting is a gentle yet powerful approach that supports healing at a neurobiological level, helping individuals process experiences that may continue to affect their emotional well-being, relationships, and daily life.

  • Many difficult experiences become stored not only as memories but also within the brain and nervous system. Even when we understand an experience logically, our bodies may continue to react as though the experience is still occurring.

Brainspotting helps identify specific eye positions that correspond with these deeper emotional and neurological patterns. By maintaining focus on a brainspot within a safe therapeutic environment, the brain is able to access and process unresolved experiences in a way that supports healing and integration.

This process engages the brain and nervous system's natural capacity for:

    • Emotional processing

    • Trauma healing

    • Nervous system regulation

    • Self-awareness

    • Emotional resilience

    • Stress reduction

Many clients describe Brainspotting as helping them access experiences that feel difficult to put into words while allowing healing to occur in a way that feels deeper than traditional cognitive approaches alone.

  • Brainspotting is an effective treatment for a wide range of concerns, particularly those involving trauma, stress, and nervous system dysregulation.

    Brainspotting may help with:

    • Complex Trauma and PTSD

    • Anxiety disorders

    • Chronic stress

    • Depression

    • Emotional dysregulation

    • Burnout and exhaustion

    • Nervous system overwhelm

    • Performance anxiety

    • High-pressure work environments

    • Difficult life experiences that continue to impact daily functioning

Because Brainspotting works directly with the brain and body, it can be particularly helpful for individuals who feel stuck despite understanding their challenges intellectually.

  • Brainspotting is considered both a somatic therapy and a neuroscience-informed approach. Rather than focusing solely on thoughts or behaviours, it recognizes the important role the nervous system plays in emotional health and healing.

Trauma, stress, and emotional experiences are often held within the body as well as the mind. Brainspotting helps access these deeper patterns, allowing the nervous system to process experiences that may have remained unresolved for years.

As healing occurs, many individuals experience:

    • Greater emotional balance

    • Reduced anxiety and stress

    • Improved nervous system regulation

    • Increased resilience

    • Greater self-awareness

    • A stronger sense of calm and stability

Because every person's experiences are unique, Brainspotting can be adapted to meet individual needs and goals.

  • Brainspotting can be used as a standalone therapy or integrated with other evidence-based approaches such as EMDR and trauma-focused counselling. This flexibility allows treatment to be tailored to each person's unique circumstances and healing journey.

My approach is grounded in connection, safety, and respect. Before exploring deeper experiences, we work together to ensure that you feel supported and equipped with the resources needed to engage in the therapeutic process safely.

The goal is not simply symptom relief, but helping you develop greater understanding, resilience, and capacity for long-term healing.

Whether you are struggling with trauma, anxiety, burnout, emotional overwhelm, or the ongoing impact of difficult life experiences, Brainspotting offers a powerful pathway toward greater regulation, healing, and well-being.
